How the GPA & CGPA Calculator Works
Almost every Pakistani university — from NUST, FAST and LUMS to Punjab University, Karachi University, UET Lahore, COMSATS, IBA, GIKI and Bahria — now uses the Higher Education Commission (HEC) approved 4.0 grade-point scale. Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated for a single semester, while your CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of every semester you have completed so far. Our calculator handles both: enter the courses of your current semester to see your GPA instantly, or enter your previous CGPA along with new semester results to project your updated CGPA.
The Formula in Simple Words
GPA is calculated by multiplying the credit hours of each course by its grade point (for example A = 4.0, B = 3.0), summing those products, and then dividing the total by the total credit hours of the semester. CGPA follows the same formula but spans all semesters together. The calculator above performs these calculations live as you type, so there is no submit button and no waiting.
HEC 4.0 Grading Scale
The grade dropdown follows the standard HEC letter grades: A (85% and above) = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D (50-53%) = 1.0 and F (below 50%) = 0.0. A few universities use slightly different cut-offs, so always cross-check with your institute's student handbook if you need an exact match.
Why You Should Track Your GPA
Your CGPA decides scholarship eligibility, dean's list honours, internship shortlists, graduate-school admissions in Pakistan and abroad, and even some Government job quotas. A small drop in one semester can pull your CGPA down significantly, while a strong semester can lift it — but only if you know the math. Use this tool at the start of every semester to set a target GPA, and again before final exams to see how much each course actually moves the needle.
Tips to Improve Your CGPA
Focus on high-credit courses first — a 4-credit course affects your CGPA almost twice as much as a 2-credit elective. Repeating a course you failed (where the policy allows) is often more effective than just doing well in new courses. And keep in mind that as your total credit hours grow, each new semester moves your CGPA less, so the earlier semesters are the most influential.
Privacy & Accuracy
Everything runs in your browser. Your courses, grades and CGPA never leave your device — Paktools does not store, log or share any academic data. The math itself is the same standard weighted average used by HEC and every accredited Pakistani university, so the numbers you see here will match your official transcript when the same grade points and credits are used.
